QuiltInk Challenge May25
Welcome to the May QuiltInk Challenge! This month, we’re diving into the art of ombré quilting with a vibrant palette inspired by Amber Elliott’s book, Quilts in Modern Color: Creating Ombré Palettes. Amber’s work is all about harnessing the beauty of gradient color transitions to create stunning, modern quilts. Her book offers quilters the tools to craft harmonious color gradients, and we’re so excited to showcase this technique in our challenge!
Before we jump into the May Challenge details, let’s take a moment to celebrate our April winner! With a burst of spooky creativity, quilters embraced the Halloween palette from the Hey Betty Boo quilt by Ann of Crafty Moose Quilts. Congratulations to our winner, [Name] (to be announced!), who will receive a festive 17 FQ bundle from Art Gallery Fabrics plus the PDF pattern of Hey Betty Boo! Thanks to everyone who participated and brought Ann’s playful Halloween vibe to life in QuiltInk!
Now, let’s dive into this month’s challenge where you’ll have the chance to win a fabulous prize and create your own spooktacular quilt!
THE PALETTE
For this Challenge, from QuiltInk, we have created a palette of 30 carefully selected fabrics from Confetti Cottons Solids collection by Riley Blake Designs to allow participants to explore endless ombré mock-ups for patterns hosted in QuiltInk. From monochromatic gradients to vibrant transitions across different hues, this palette offers a wide range of possibilities. Whether you’re looking to experiment with subtle color shifts or bold contrasts, this palette gives you the flexibility to bring your quilting designs to life with the stunning results of ombré coloring. I can’t wait to see what you create with these gorgeous colors!
THE BOOK
Quilts in Modern Color: Creating Ombré Palettes is a comprehensive guide that explores the process of building ombré color palettes for quilting. Amber Elliott presents 14 projects—10 full-size quilts and 4 smaller projects—designed to teach quilters how to select and arrange colors to achieve striking gradient effects. Through insightful explanations of color theory and step-by-step instructions, Amber makes it easy to create stunning ombré quilts, even if you’re new to the technique.
Amber also provides tips on using the color wheel to create harmonious combinations, giving quilters the confidence to explore ombré in their designs.
The winner of the QuiltInk May Challenge will receive a copy of Quilts in Modern Color: Creating Ombré Palettes by Amber Elliott, sent directly to them!
I absolutely loved reading this book!—it’s a wonderful resource for quilters who want to deepen their understanding of color. I had a great time learning new techniques and discovering fresh perspectives on working with color in quilting. It’s definitely one of those books that inspires me to try one of the wonderful projects in it, and I look forward to finding time to make one in the future!

Designer Spotlight – Ann Skaehill
Welcome to our 17th Designer Spotlight! This month, we’re excited to introduce you to Ann from Crafty Moose Quilts, a designer whose journey beautifully reflects what quilting means to so many of us.
Ann’s story is a powerful example of how sewing can become a refuge — a source of healing, peace, and personal transformation. Like many quilters, she didn’t plan to become a designer, but the act of creating with fabric became her safe space during a difficult season of life. That space grew into a thriving business, a signature style, and a deep love for color and connection.
In this heartfelt interview, Ann shares her path to quilting, what inspires her patterns, her love for gradients, and how QuiltInk plays a role in her design process and community work.
Whether you’re just starting out or dreaming up your next pattern, we’re sure Ann’s story will resonate with you.
Personal Background
Ann, as we dive into your story, could you provide a snapshot of who you are and take us on the journey that led you to where you are today?
I have lived in the North Dallas area since I was 11 years old but at 48 years old now, I still don’t like to drive in downtown Dallas! I am a SFA Alumni and I have a degree in business. I have been married for 25 years and our son is just about “grown and flown!”
Quilting Journey
When and how did you start quilting? What drew you to quilting as a form of expression?
In 2011, I was diagnosed with several autoimmune diseases. They were all “in a flare” at the same time and I was forced to step away from my role in ministry to care for myself. My grandmother was an avid sewist / quilter and my mother can still sew just about anything! But I hated everything about sewing because I would have rather been outside playing, which is exactly where I was through the majority of my childhood. During my unexpected health journey in adulthood, I inherited my grandmother’s sewing machine and a box of fabric. Enter YouTube, and a heart to prove to myself that I could sew like my elders did, and the love of quilting was born!
Quilting is healing to me. When everything else feels outside of my control, I get to control the fabrics, the design, and the finish of a quilt. It gives me a sense of normalcy when my body is struggling. I have great joy through the whole process, although sewing curves rarely brings me joy (wink). Curve are definitely my nemesis!
Pattern Designing
What inspired you to start designing quilt patterns? How do you approach the creative process of designing a new pattern?
In the beginning, following patterns was really challenging for me because I didn’t understand the vocabulary and I needed really good diagrams in order to follow along. Early on, I learned that not all quilt patterns are well written, or even edited for that matter. I found that it was easier to design something of my own than it was to follow what someone else had written poorly.
I made a t-shirt quilt for my husband and before I knew it I was being inundated with requests for t-shirt quilts. I decided to open a small business making custom t-shirt quilts and I still run that business today! I make an average of 6-10 quilts per month (it’s very busy in the Spring due to kids graduating from high school and college). I also have t-shirt quilt patterns available to quilters who are eager to learn the process from beginning to end. My T-Shirt Tiles patterns are the ultimate in “hand-holding” because it’s important to me that quilters feel successful through every step of the process.
Inspiration for traditional quilt patterns comes from so many places. Sometimes there are gradients of color that I’m aching to use, sometimes I see a design on someone’s t-shirt that inspires a pattern, and sometimes I simply play with shapes in Adobe Illustrator until I find something I love. Nature is also a big inspiration for me. My husband and I absolutely love hiking in mountains and watching sunsets together.
Style and Aesthetics
How would you define your pattern style? Are there specific themes or elements that consistently appear in your designs?
Even though I just finished writing my first Intermediate Level pattern, I would say I enjoy simplicity. I’m always short on time for “fun sewing” due to my long queue of customer work, so I appreciate patterns that come together quickly. I also appreciate the ease of using my scraps in quilts. The very first pattern I ever wrote, Linden’s Joy, was created specifically with the scraps from a commissioned quilt. Fat Quarters make my heart happy because sometimes I want 15 different fabrics from a line but I don’t know how much yardage to buy / nor do I have space to store yardage. But I do have handy bins for all of my Fat Quarters, which means I’m more likely to write patterns for the quilters out there like me who have an abundance of Fat Quarters ready to be used.
Color
How does color play a role in your pattern designing? Do you have a favorite color? Are there certain color combinations you find particularly appealing?
There is something about ombre shading and gradients of color (ie rainbows) that truly moves me. It just draws me in and holds me captive! I use ombre or gradient colors in quilts every chance I get.
Business Activities
Apart from designing patterns, what other activities are integral to your quilting business?
(Membership, notions, courses, etc)
Sometimes quilters just need an easy button and quilt kits are exactly that in my opinion! I carry a growing library of quilt kit options in my online fabric shop. Our college aged son fills the majority of the orders and it helps him pay for college.
Maintaining a good working relationship with local long arm quilters is critical to my t-shirt quilt business. I have been blessed beyond measure with three different local long arm quilters who have shared my attention to detail so that my customers have something that will last a lifetime.
In the wee hours of the day, I enjoy testing patterns for my designer friends because it expands my knowledge of techniques, allows me an opportunity to study someone else’s work, and best of all it gives me an opportunity to show off the incredible talent of my friends.
Online Presence
Where can people find your work online? (Website, social media handles, online marketplaces). How do you use online platforms to connect with your audience and fellow quilters?
Web: www.CraftyMooseQuilts.com
Facebook: CraftyMooseQuilts
Instagram: CraftyMoose_Quilts
Seeing what people have made from my patterns is a delight like no other! I sincerely get emotional when quilters tag me in their posts so I can see their beautiful quilts. Pattern writing takes so much time and dedication, taking 3 months or more from concept to pattern launch. The whole goal behind pattern writing is to design something quilters want to make and when you have tangible evidence that the goal has been met, it’s extremely rewarding.
Upcoming Projects
Can you provide a sneak peek into any upcoming projects or designs you’re working on? Any exciting collaborations or events?
My first Halloween pattern called “Hey Betty Boo” releases April 11th! Betty Boo, the sweetest little ghost, and her gal pals, are the most darling ghost gaggle in town.
I have two Christmas patterns in the works, one of which is a little “folksy” and could make for a beautiful cabin quilt. Charm Packs are a cost effective way to purchase fabric to make a scrappy quilt and I have several more patterns designed and ready to be written that are Charm Pack friendly.
And of course my Sweater Weather Sampler block is designed and ready to go for this year’s sew-along with The Nine Patch Quilt Collective!
QuiltInk Experience
How has QuiltInk contributed to your quilt pattern design business? Could you share your experience with the platform and how it has influenced your creative process and connected you with fellow quilters?
Listen, if I’m going to overthink something it’s going to be the colors in my cover quilt. QuiltInk has made it so easy for me AND my pattern testers to play with colors and fabrics without having to purchase a single cut of fabric. It has also been extremely helpful for our Sweater Weather Sampler quilters who want to try out different colors to see where they land in each of our 9 blocks. What an incredible tool!
The cherry on top is being able to load all of the patterned fabrics I have in my online fabric shop so that I can make mockups with the fabrics I have on hand. It’s genius and Catalina is a complete JOY to work with!
Meet the Fabric Shops – S&S Handcrafted
It’s time for our 5th “Meet the Fabric Shops” interview, and this one brings a touch of sunshine and spookiness! ☀️🦇 This month, we’re spotlighting Kerri from S&S Handcrafted, a California-based shop owner who grew up by the waves and now dreams of opening a coastal retreat quilt shop. Kerri’s story is filled with personality—from her family’s deep roots in textiles to her unique offerings like gothic-inspired fabrics and custom Lucy Boston quilt centers. She brings her love for bold, quirky prints into everything she curates, and she’s built a space where creativity and individuality shine. Dive into her interview to discover how she’s turning her passions into something magical—one spooky fat quarter at a time!
Join us as we dive into Jenni’s journey, the story behind her shop, and what makes Handcraft Happy Hour a must-visit for quilters!
Personal Background
Kerri , could you tell us a bit about yourself? (location, age, educational background, …) Who is behind S&S Handcrafted?
I grew up soaking up the sun and catching waves along the Southern California coast, where surfing and swimming were my summer staples. The laid-back, vibrant lifestyle of the region has shaped who I am and continues to inspire me in everything I do. My dream is to one day open a destination retreat quilt shop right here in Southern California, blending my love for the craft with the relaxed, creative energy of the coast.
Quilting Journey
How did you first get into quilting? When did you decide to turn this passion into a business by opening your shop?
My mom worked at sewing machine shop my entire childhood, my grandparents were sock makers for Hanes US and my aunts all worked in the Ethan Allen factories as upholsterers! I made my first quilt in 2011, with zero idea of what I was doing!!
Shop Story and Style
What’s the story behind S&S Handcrafted? When did it start, and how would you describe its personality, style, and size?
My shop name is pretty un-original, S&S – for my hyphenated last name of Sanders Smith!
Product Offerings
What types of fabrics do you focus on? How do you offer them to customers—by the yard, as kits, or with custom options?
When I first opened we focused on non main-stream mostly catering to the Halloween and goth crowds! This fit with my love of gothic everything and what we saw as need in the industry – more spooky fabrics!!
I have expended to offer a variety of brands, and do sell a lot of solids and blenders, I’d love to have every solids of Art Gallery Fabrics for sale in the shop!
Special Collections and Products
Are there any collections, brands, or unique products you’re especially proud to carry?
I’ve designed a unique single-piece center for Lucy Boston quilts! As much as I adore Lucy Boston quilts, I wasn’t fond of how the seams disrupted the center design. So, I’ve created acrylic templates and paper pieces that allow you to showcase larger prints while minimizing the seams, giving you a cleaner, more seamless look without compromising the beauty of the design. Now, everyone can enjoy the charm of Lucy Boston quilts with a fresh twist!!
Inspiration and Trends
What inspires you when choosing fabrics or products for your shop? Do you follow any specific trends or themes?
Honestly, I love selecting fun and quirky fabrics and collections that I’d personally be excited to sew with. My goal is to inspire others to see the potential beyond what the fabric initially shows. Sometimes, it’s challenging to put that vision into words, but I want everyone to feel the same creative spark and excitement I see in each piece!
Additional Services
Do you offer any other quilting-related services, like pattern design, long-arming, or classes?
Currently, I only offer acrylic template cutting, we are hoping to expand in the near future.
Online Presence
Where can people find your shop online? (Website, social media handles, online marketplaces). How do you use online platforms to connect with your audience and fellow quilters?
I currently sell on Etsy at https://www.etsy.com/shop/SandSHandcraftedLLC?ref=seller-platform-mcnav
Honestly we are not very good at the social media and posting fun stuff for the shop!
Upcoming News and Projects
Are there any exciting new projects, events, or collaborations coming up that you’d like to share with the community
None currently, we would love the opportunity to create more quilt kits with up and coming designers!
QuiltInk Experience
How has QuiltInk been useful for your shop or customers? Any favorite tools or ways it’s made things easier?
My customers love being able to recolor the quilt patterns, using fabrics we have available in the shop for a truly custom quilt.

Halloween has always held a special place in Ann’s heart, especially the magical moments spent with her son, racing from house to house, giggling over their candy hauls. Those memories of joy and excitement have stayed with her, and they’re reflected in the colors she’s chosen for this month’s challenge. Inspired by the playful vibe of Lella Boutique’s 2024 Hey Boo fabric line, Ann selected a palette filled with rich oranges, deep purples, and cheerful whites. These colors, reminiscent of autumn nights and Halloween festivities, evoke the spirit of celebration and whimsy that has always made Halloween so special to her.
These are the same colors she’s using for her upcoming quilt pattern Hey Betty Boo, a fun and lively design that will be released this April. Perfect for capturing the fun, spooky magic of the season, this palette is sure to inspire your quilt designs!
With this palette, you’re invited to get creative—whether you’re stitching up a Halloween masterpiece or simply enjoying the playful spirit these colors inspire. We can’t wait to see how you’ll bring these colors to life in your QuiltInk mock-ups!
MEET ANN FROM CRAFTY MOOSE QUILTS
Ann is a passionate quilter living in McKinney, TX, with her husband and almost-grown son. She began her quilting journey in 2011, primarily as a self-taught enthusiast (thanks to YouTube!). Her mother, however, made sure she mastered the essentials early on—like the quarter-inch seam and the magic of a good iron.
By day, Ann creates custom t-shirt and memory quilts for clients across the country. By night, she designs fun and joyful quilt patterns, hoping they inspire others just as much as they bring her joy. Ann is also a designer with The Nine Patch Quilt Collective, co-hosting the annual Sweater Weather Sampler.
On her website, you’ll find her online fabric shop, featuring Art Gallery Fabrics and a wide range of quilt kits. Ann’s work is driven by a love for simple yet striking designs and color gradients, a passion that’s paired perfectly with her love for Quilt Ink.
Her inspiration comes from the shifting hues of sunsets, oceans, and mountains, along with the unexpected beauty she finds in the stacks of t-shirts that come through her sewing room.

Designer Spotlight – Claire Dupont
This month, our QuiltInk Designer Spotlight features Claire Dupont, the creative force behind Namaju Quilt Studio. Claire is one of the non-American quilt pattern designers in QuiltInk—she’s from France, Europe! We love being by the side of quilt pattern designers all over the world, celebrating the diversity of styles and perspectives they bring to the quilting community.
With a background as a professional dancer turned nurse, Claire’s path to quilt pattern design is a story of resilience, creativity, and passion. Drawn to quilting through a search for a meaningful handmade gift, she quickly became captivated by the art of fabric selection, color play, and design. Her patterns are known for their modern, geometric aesthetics—often medallion-based—with a striking balance of angles and curves, a nod to her dance background.
Beyond designing, Claire also shares her expertise through quilt-alongs, bringing an educational approach to her work. With a new pattern release coming soon, there’s much to look forward to! Read on to learn more about her design journey, inspirations, and how she uses QuiltInk to connect with quilters.
Personal Background
Claire, as we dive into your story, could you provide a snapshot of who you are and take us on the journey that led you to where you are today?
I am originally from the Paris region, but I now live in the northern part of France with my husband, three kids, a dog, and a cat!
I was initially a professional dancer, but due to several knee injuries, I had to retrain and became a nurse. In 2022, I transitioned to full-time quilt pattern design.
Quilting Journey
When and how did you start quilting? What drew you to quilting as a form of expression?
Twenty years ago, I first started sewing clothes. I discovered modern quilting in 2021 while looking for a handmade gift idea for a newborn. Since then, I can’t stop!
I have always had a passion for fabrics. Picking fabrics, choosing colors, combining them, and sewing them together… There are so many steps in the quilting process and so many possibilities that make me want to create more and more.
Pattern Designing
What inspired you to start designing quilt patterns? How do you approach the creative process of designing a new pattern?
Very quickly, I started designing my own quilts and decided to learn the technical part of pattern writing.
Sometimes I have a lot of ideas, and sometimes I have none! This is very spontaneous. It often starts with a single idea that evolves into a pattern.
Style and Aesthetics
How would you define your pattern style? Are there specific themes or elements that consistently appear in your designs?
I often create medallion-based designs that are modern and geometric. I love to create simple and airy patterns.
As a former dancer, I have maintained a great interest in pure lines, combined with curves to convey a sense of movement. I enjoy creating harmony between angles and curves.
Color
How does color play a role in your pattern designing? Do you have a favorite color? Are there certain color combinations you find particularly appealing?
I always use solids.
I don’t have a favorite color palette, but I often use white or cream in my designs to bring light.
Business Activities
Apart from designing patterns, what other activities are integral to your quilting business?
(Membership, notions, courses, etc)
Last year, I created the Four Seasons Quilt Along with videos demonstrating the technical skills. I like this educational aspect.
Online Presence
