Designer Spotlight – Claire Dupont

This month, our QuiltInk Designer Spotlight features Claire Dupont, the creative force behind Namaju Quilt Studio. Claire is one of the non-American quilt pattern designers in QuiltInk—she’s from France, Europe! We love being by the side of quilt pattern designers all over the world, celebrating the diversity of styles and perspectives they bring to the quilting community.

With a background as a professional dancer turned nurse, Claire’s path to quilt pattern design is a story of resilience, creativity, and passion. Drawn to quilting through a search for a meaningful handmade gift, she quickly became captivated by the art of fabric selection, color play, and design. Her patterns are known for their modern, geometric aesthetics—often medallion-based—with a striking balance of angles and curves, a nod to her dance background.
Beyond designing, Claire also shares her expertise through quilt-alongs, bringing an educational approach to her work. With a new pattern release coming soon, there’s much to look forward to! Read on to learn more about her design journey, inspirations, and how she uses QuiltInk to connect with quilters.

Personal Background

Claire, as we dive into your story, could you provide a snapshot of who you are and take us on the journey that led you to where you are today?

I am originally from the Paris region, but I now live in the northern part of France with my husband, three kids, a dog, and a cat!

I was initially a professional dancer, but due to several knee injuries, I had to retrain and became a nurse. In 2022, I transitioned to full-time quilt pattern design.

Quilting Journey

When and how did you start quilting? What drew you to quilting as a form of expression?

Twenty years ago, I first started sewing clothes. I discovered modern quilting in 2021 while looking for a handmade gift idea for a newborn. Since then, I can’t stop!

I have always had a passion for fabrics. Picking fabrics, choosing colors, combining them, and sewing them together… There are so many steps in the quilting process and so many possibilities that make me want to create more and more.

Pattern Designing

What inspired you to start designing quilt patterns? How do you approach the creative process of designing a new pattern?

Very quickly, I started designing my own quilts and decided to learn the technical part of pattern writing.

Sometimes I have a lot of ideas, and sometimes I have none! This is very spontaneous. It often starts with a single idea that evolves into a pattern.

Style and Aesthetics

How would you define your pattern style? Are there specific themes or elements that consistently appear in your designs?

I often create medallion-based designs that are modern and geometric. I love to create simple and airy patterns.

As a former dancer, I have maintained a great interest in pure lines, combined with curves to convey a sense of movement. I enjoy creating harmony between angles and curves.

Color

How does color play a role in your pattern designing? Do you have a favorite color? Are there certain color combinations you find particularly appealing?

I always use solids.

I don’t have a favorite color palette, but I often use white or cream in my designs to bring light.

Business Activities

Apart from designing patterns, what other activities are integral to your quilting business?

(Membership, notions, courses, etc)

Last year, I created the Four Seasons Quilt Along with videos demonstrating the technical skills. I like this educational aspect.

Online Presence

Where can people find your work online? (Website, social media handles, online marketplaces). How do you use online platforms to connect with your audience and fellow quilters?

A new pattern will be released on March 20th.

I plan to reiterate the 4 Seasons Quilt Along and create a free pattern!

QuiltInk Experience

How has QuiltInk contributed to your quilt pattern design business? Could you share your experience with the platform and how it has influenced your creative process and connected you with fellow quilters?

QuiktInk allows quilters to pick colors and fabrics quickly, easily, and for free! It is a fantastic tool for promoting my patterns.

I use the private room for my pattern testers. It is really helpful and appreciated.
