As summer winds down and routines begin to slow, it feels good to hold on to small rituals that bring calm and joy. For me, sitting down to color a quilt mock-up is exactly that. Just a few minutes of playing with shapes and shades can be wonderfully relaxing—and sometimes it even sparks the perfect idea for a new quilt project.
That’s exactly what makes our QuiltInk Challenges so special. They’re an open invitation to experiment with color, support the designers behind the patterns, celebrate inspiring fabric collections, and connect with other quilters along the way. This month, {name}, the challenge features the beautiful Flourish collection by Alexandra Bordallo, one of our talented QuiltInk designers. And who knows—while coloring for the challenge, you might stumble upon the perfect project for your next quilt.
So as we step into September, I encourage you to join in. Think of it as a small, creative pause in your day—healthy, inspiring, and full of possibilities.
And don’t forget to explore all the sections below—new patterns, upcoming events, an inspiring interview, and color theory insights—there’s plenty waiting to spark your imagination. |

Last month, we kicked off a new mini-series on color placement, following our exploration of the meaning of color, color harmonies, value, saturation, and greyscale. In August, we focused on foreground and background, learning how where a color lives can dramatically affect perception.
This month, we continue the series with a new focus: leading the viewer’s eye across your quilt to create movement and flow. We’ll explore how contrast, repetition, and progression guide attention and make a quilt feel dynamic rather than static.
If you’d like a reference for all the previous topics, including meaning of color and harmonies, you can download the free exporting sheets. More resources will be coming soon once things settle down after the summer’s frenetic activity!
Create Movement with Color (Part 2)
The Power of Placement
The way colors are placed in a quilt can guide the eye, emphasize focal points, and create visual flow. By thinking about movement, you can make your quilts more engaging and dynamic. The right combination of contrast, repetition, and progression of value can lead someone through your design in a natural, intuitive way.
High-Contrast Focal Points
Areas of high contrast, whether in value, saturation, or both, naturally draw the eye. Placing these strategically creates focal points and directs the viewer through your design. Be careful not to overload the quilt — too many high-contrast areas can create visual clutter.
Using Repetition and Progression
Repeating colors or gradually shifting values creates rhythm and movement. For example, a line of warm hues can guide the eye across blocks, while subtle transitions in tone create depth and continuity. This approach helps your design feel alive and intentional.
Avoiding Visual Clutter
Movement works best when paired with breathing space. Low-contrast or neutral areas give the eyes a chance to rest, allowing focal points to shine. Think of it like a dance — your eye needs pauses as well as steps.
Movement in Action
Below, you’ll see QuiltInk mock-ups demonstrating how color placement leads the eye. Notice which areas attract attention first, how repeated colors create visual paths, and how calmer zones allow the eye to rest. |
| |
|
Experimenting with movement and eye flow is key. Rearranging colors, repeating hues, or playing with contrast can change the rhythm of your quilt entirely. Even small adjustments can transform a static design into one that feels dynamic and intentional.
Your Next Step
Explore the QuiltInk Wall to see how other quilters use movement with color in their mock-ups. Observing how different palettes, contrasts, and repetitions guide the eye will inspire you and give practical insights you can apply to your own designs. Take note of which quilts make your eyes travel naturally and think about why — it’s one of the best ways to learn and improve your own color placement skills. |
| |
Get Your QuiltInk Color Wheel Downloadables
Understanding color is one of the most powerful ways to elevate your quilting. This month, I didn’t create a new downloadable, but you can still access two valuable tools from recent newsletters: the Quilter’s Color Wheel and the Meaning of Color in Quilting guide. Both are designed to boost your color confidence and spark creativity.
These resources connect the emotions and theory of color to your projects, helping you make inspired choices—whether for bold contrasts or subtle harmonies. Keep them handy as practical references to make your quilts truly sing with color.
If you’re new or missed them before, now’s the perfect time to catch up. And stay tuned—more helpful downloadables are on their way!

I think I’ve mentioned it before, but did you know that besides QuiltInk, I’m also a quilt pattern designer and even a ghost writer for other designers? For the past few years, most of my energy has gone into building QuiltInk, but behind the scenes I’ve quietly been working on something very close to my heart: my own brand, Quiltilus.
It’s been a long journey—one with detours, frustrations, and more than a few moments where I wondered if I’d ever get it right. Honestly, I’ve felt like I’ve been down a rabbit hole for years. Was it lack of experience? Bad timing? Maybe. But looking back, I see it differently now. If those paths hadn’t been so winding, I wouldn’t have ended up here—working with the best people, in the right place, and with the right energy for Quiltilus to finally grow into what I always hoped it could be.
I’m not ready to share all the details just yet (I want to make sure everything is solid first!), but I can tell you this: I feel more hopeful than ever that it will finally see the light. ✨
And maybe that’s the real message I want to share with you, {name}. Sometimes things don’t work out the way we expect—not because the road is closed, but because it’s leading us somewhere better. So if you’re in one of those hard seasons, don’t close the door on your expectations. Keep moving. Trust that even the setbacks might be shaping you for something greater ahead. |
