PATTERN RELEASE / GIVEAWAY |
Warped Rainbows by Maureen Garner Quilts
Giveaway: Color and share in the Wall from 10th to 17th to win a yearly Supporter QuiltInk Subscription. Release date: April 18th. |
I've been doodling concepts for Warped Rainbow for several years. It wasn't until I took the class, Design with TouchDraw and the Drunkard’s Path, with Jenny Haynes from Papper, Sax, Sten, that I had the tools to create it. The quilt is 65% strip sets and plain blocks (yes, I calculated it), and much easier than it looks. Once you get the smallest curve done in the drunkard's path, you will be home free!
The templates are included in the pattern, however, I recommend ordering Jenny's acrylic templates at www.pappersaxsten.com/product/multiple-drunkards-path-template-10-1-2/. There are so many beautiful blocks you can make with them.
The support and generosity of Jenny has allowed me to share this pattern with you. I named it Warped Rainbow, because it is a little dark and moody. (But it also looks great as happy and bright.) |

There are 4 quilt sizes in this pattern: Baby (33.5" x 33.5"), Throw (63.5" x 63.5"), Twin (63.5" x 93.5"), and Bed (93.5" x 93.5"). |

We’ve seen lots of new faces in the QuiltInk community lately—welcome! This month’s tip is especially for you (but a great reminder for everyone). It also comes in response to several recent questions we've received from users. So let’s take a moment to walk through how to manage your saved mock-ups using the new interface.
First things first: If you don’t have a free QuiltInk account yet, now’s the time to join! With a free account, you can save your mock-ups, share them on the Wall, and keep track of your favorites—all in one place. |
| |
On your Profile page, you’ll find three sections:
- Finished mock-ups – ones you’ve already published,
- Drafts – works in progress,
- Favorites – mock-ups you’ve saved from other users.
|
| |
🔍 Also important to remember: Every mock-up is tied to a specific type of pattern, and you’ll see a small tag indicating which kind it is:
- Pub. – From a public pattern
- Com. – From a pattern in community mode
- Priv. – From a pattern in a private room
- Inac. – From a pattern that is currently inactive
- Dis. – From a disabled pattern (no longer available, but still visible to those who colored it before)
- Kit – From a kit-mode pattern
|
| |
Thanks to the new layout, each mock-up now has a gray options bar on the right-hand side, giving you full control at a glance:
✅ Finished Mock-Ups
"i" – View pattern details (you can open, recolor, buy, or visit the designer’s page).
- 👁 / 🙈 – Toggle visibility: show or hide from public, private, or community walls.
- ➕ – Duplicate to create a new draft with the same colorway.
- 🗑 – Delete it.
- 📤 – Export with fabric requirements or just the image.
✏️ Drafts
"i" – Same pattern info pop-up.
- ☁️ – Publish to the wall (according to pattern type: public, private, or community). Once published, it becomes a finished mock-up.
- ➕ – Duplicate.
- 🗑 – Delete.
- 📤 – Export.
⭐ Favorites
"i" – See full pattern details.
- 🏷 – Label showing if it's from the public, private, or community wall.
- ➕ – Duplicate and start coloring with someone else’s colorway.
- ❌ – Remove from your favorites.
- 📤 – Export.
💡 And don’t forget: you can limit whether other users can favorite or export your mock-ups—total control is in your hands! |
| |
Now go explore all these possibilities and enjoy QuiltInk in its full creative potential!

As we continue exploring color harmonies, today we’re diving into Square color harmony, the final major color harmony in our series. This technique involves selecting four colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel. It’s similar to the Tetradic harmony we explored last month, but instead of relying on two pairs of complementary colors, the Square harmony distributes hues more evenly across the spectrum, offering a balanced and harmonious feel in your quilt designs.
What is Square Color Harmony?
Square color harmony uses four colors spaced equally around the color wheel, creating a palette with a consistent distance between hues. This ensures a more uniform color distribution, making the scheme vibrant but less contrasting than tetradic. For example, starting from red, your square harmony palette would include yellow-green, cyan, and violet-blue.
This color approach is a wonderful way for achieving boldness and balance, offering enough contrast to create dynamic designs without overwhelming the viewer. |
| |

| |
Meaning and Emotion
Quilts made using square color harmony often feel playful, colorful, and well-balanced. Since no one color dominates the palette, the final piece radiates a sense of completeness and cohesion. This harmony is especially suited for designs where you want equal visual weight throughout the quilt, with multiple areas of interest.
Focal Points in Square Quilts
The key to working with square harmony is to manage color relationships thoughtfully. Since all four hues are spaced evenly, you’ll need to decide which colors will be dominant and which will be used more sparingly. Using fabric texture, value shifts, and strategic placement, you can guide the viewer’s eye while maintaining overall balance.
Quilting Application
Square color palettes work beautifully across a wide variety of quilt designs. Whether you're piecing curves, working with solids, or mixing in playful prints, this harmony helps you explore contrast and unity simultaneously. It’s perfect for quilts that aim to be bold without leaning into harsh contrasts.
Square Inspiration!
Below, I’ve selected two quilt mock-ups from the QuiltInk wall that showcase the beauty of square harmony. Look at how the colors flow evenly across the design, and notice the balance of saturation and tone. These examples are proof that a well-planned square color palette can lead to creative and captivating quilt compositions.
|
| |
Explore and Create Your Own Color Palettes!
To help you explore color harmonies further, I’ve found a new tool you’ll love: Sessions Color Calculator.
Choose your base color and select from a variety of color harmony options (including Square, Tetradic, Triadic, and more). You’ll instantly get a palette with HEX, RGB, and CMYK values, along with real-world design samples that make it easy to evaluate how your palette works in action.
Once you have your favorite combination, go to QuiltInk, search for the best fabric matches, and start coloring your next quilt mock-up! It’s a fun way to experiment and grow your confidence in color selection. |

I’m writing this with a mix of excitement and butterflies in my stomach… because something big is coming to QuiltInk. I can’t say much just yet (I know, I know — I hate vague teases too), but I promise it’s going to mark a true before-and-after for the platform.
This next step means growth, and new possibilities — and also… a new tech man. 😅 Don’t worry, I’m not collecting husbands — one is more than enough, thank you very much! My current tech man is my husband, and while he's been incredible keeping QuiltInk up and running, it's time to bring in extra reinforcements.
This transition feels huge. A little scary, very exciting, and 100% necessary to keep up with how QuiltInk is growing — thanks to all of you. So stay tuned. I promise I’ll share more when the time is right. For now, just know that we’re building something better together… with fewer marital tech meetings at the dinner table. |
